Description

The Santa Margarida volcano is an extinct volcano with an altitude of 766 meters located in the volcanic region of Olot. It is situated in the Cot plain, west of the municipality of Santa Pau (Garrotxa), and is part of the Natural Park of the Volcanic Zone of La Garrotxa.
It is one of the most important volcanic structures in the area, and its extensive crater has a perimeter of about 2,000 meters. In the middle of the crater plain, there is the Hermitage of Santa Margarida de Sacot, of Romanesque origin, which gives its name to the volcano. The crater has a diameter of approximately 350 meters and a depth of 79 meters. It is one of the craters that best preserves the typical circular morphology, and its cone is surrounded by a wooded area. It erupted about 11,000 years ago.
